Flu Free Christmas

Posted by admin 24 - December - 2007

To celebrate the spirit of Christmas, The Humanity Forum (THF) donated flu vaccinations to a small nursing home in Singapore, Lee Ah Mooi. Located near Thomson Rd, this independent nursing home houses more than 110 old folks. Most of them require constant medical attention therefore it employs about 30 full time staffs, mostly nurses.

The vaccination was conducted by Dr. Lim of Dr. Lim’s Medicine & Surgery, who has more than 12 years experience in dealing with nursing homes. He has an extensive knowledge about this home, as he is the regular doctor who visits these old folks regularly on weekly basis. 140 units of Northern Hemisphere Influenza Vaccine 2007/2008 –recommended by World Health Organisation (WHO), were given to most of the old folks and the full time staffs. The vaccines will be able to give 1 whole year protection from general flu/influenza. From our conversation with Dr. Lim, we found out that Singapore Government strongly recommends yearly flu vaccination to all old folks home, particularly nursing homes. It is very important for them, because most of these old folks are fairly weak and need more immunity towards this virus. However, not all homes could afford them due to their high operating cost, particularly for the independent ones.

THF hopes to continue providing these vaccinations for the old folks in the future. As our funding is very limited, we might not be able to provide too many of them. Therefore we are urging more corporate organizations or even general publics to consider these activities. Christmas season is the season of caring and sharing, but is also the season of monsoon where flu virus spreads.
